Jure Rebselj: Ribosome profiling: Studying the Effect of Aging on Ribosome Pausing

October 12, 2023 | 6:00 pm | Faculty of Biotechnology in lecture hall B5 (Večna pot 111, 1000 Ljubljana)

The American-Slovenian Educational Foundation (ASEF) in cooperation with the Student Organization of the Faculty of Biotechnology is organizing a popular science lecture, which will be held on Thursday, October 12 at 6 p.m. by Jure Rebselj, ASEF JUnior Fellow 2022 and a master’s student at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Ljubljana. The lecture is entitled “Ribosome profiling: Studying the Effect of Aging on Ribosome Pausing” and will be held at the Faculty of Biotechnology in lecture hall B5 (Večna pot 111, 1000 Ljubljana).

REGISTRATION

To attend the lecture, you must register by October 12, no later than 5 p.m.

ABOUT THE LECTURE

Aging has an important impact on the disruption of the protein balance in cells and the consequent role in many diseases. An important role in maintaining the balance is played by the ribosome quality control system, or RQC, as it is responsible for resolving aggregations of proteins due to ribosome collisions. The formation of the aforementioned collisions is caused by a phenomenon called ribosome pausing, which affects the efficiency of protein translation. The pausing can be studied using the ribosome profiling method, as it allows us to study cellular translational processes in the exact cell moment, which Jure will present during the lecture.

ABOUT THE LECTURER

Jure Rebselj is a second-year student of the master’s program in biotechnology at the Faculty of Biotechnology in Ljubljana. He is doing his master’s thesis on the regulatory mechanisms of LCD proteins in the cell in the Laboratory for RNA Networks of the Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana under the supervision of dr. Jernej Ulet. As part of the ASEF Junior Fellowship program, Dr. Jernej Ule at the Francis Crick Institute in London.

ASEF YOUNG MINDS

ASEF Young Minds is a series of popular science lectures, which encourages young people to present their research work and experience gained within the framework of the ASEF fellowship program in a way that is accessible and understandable to the general public. In the project, ASEF connects with local organizations that operate in the places where the lecturers come from. The aim of cooperation is to connect and integrate young learners into the local Slovenian environment.

ASEF connects and unites Slovenian scientists and academics all over the world.

The project is supported by the Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Youth and the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad.
