Vid Keršič: What can AI learn from graph data?
The American Slovenian Education Foundation is organizing a popular science lecture on Tuesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. in collaboration with the Student Club Slovenska Bistrica. The lecture will be held by Vid Keršič, ASEF Junior Fellow 2021, young researcher and PhD student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, University of Maribor. The lecture is entitled “What can AI learn from graph data?” and will be held at the Student Club Slovenska Bistrica (Trg svobode 5, 2310 Slovenska Bistrica).

ABOUT THE LECTURE
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been appearing in the media almost every day recently, thanks to the leap forward in generative AI, i.e. the ChatGPT conversational bot and the generation of images from text commands. Other areas of AI are also evolving rapidly, including machine learning on graphs. A graph is a data structure that can be used to model a set of objects and the relationships between them. This lecture will introduce the basics of graph theory and present some general examples of graph applications. We will then look at how to cope with the large amount of data that is nowadays essential for AI models to work well and at different machine learning models. We will conclude the talk with an introduction to their use in our daily lives and a look into the future.
ABOUT THE LECTURER
Vid Keršič is a young researcher pursuing his PhD in Computer Science and Informatics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, University of Maribor (FERI UM). He has also completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Computer Science at FERI and has been working in the Blockchain Lab:UM research group since 2018. His research interests are in the area of decentralised artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and blockchain technology. He has been an ASEF Fellow since 2021, and in the same year, he completed a (virtual) research visit with ASEF mentor Prof. Dr. Jure Leskovec at Stanford University.

ASEF Young Minds is a series of popular science lectures, which encourages young people to present their research work and experience gained within the framework of the ASEF fellowship program in a way that is accessible and understandable to the general public. In the project, ASEF connects with local organizations that operate in the places where the lecturers come from. The aim of cooperation is to connect and integrate young learners into the local Slovenian environment.

Student Club Slovenska Bistrica is a non-profit organization that offers its members various benefits and organizes sports, entertainment, eco-conscious, social and cultural events. They inform students about current issues and provide education outside the faculty walls.
