Uroš Prešern: Metastasis and Invasion
ASEF is organizing an online popular science lecture in the series ASEF Young Minds, which will be implemented on Thursday, April 21, at 7 pm by Uroš Prešern, ASEF Junior Fellow Generation 2019, who is Master student of biochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana , who comes from Dolenjska.
REGISTRATION
To attend the lecture, you have to register in advance until March 29 at 6 pm at the following link. All registered to the event will receive a Zoom link on their email address on time.
ABOUT THE LECTURE
One of the key acquisitions of cancer cells is the ability to invade and metastasize, as it allows them to spread from the site of origin throughout the body. And metastasis is the leading cause of death in cancer deaths. So what are the mechanisms that give cancer cells this new and dangerous property? What obstacles do they have to overcome? Of course, the key question is: can this process be prevented or stopped? The answers to these questions are far from unambiguous and finally resolved, but during the lecture we will try to shed light on this complex, very interesting area, which has great potential in planning new ways to treat cancer.
ABOUT THE LECTURER
Uroš Prešern is completing a master’s degree in biochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, and will continue his studies at the doctoral level next year. He discovered his joy of biochemistry and research in his high school years when during research assignments at the Jožef Štefan Institute. Throughout his studies at the Department of Biochemistry, he participated in research into the signaling roles of the tumor marker EpCAM, and spent the summer of 2019 as an ASEF Fellow in the laboratory of prof. Andrej Šali in San Francisco. He also wants to focus his research on studying the processes in cancer cells and finding potential new treatments. When he is not wearing a laboratory gown, Uroš likes to photograph, walk in the mountains, dance and cook.
ASEF YOUNG MINDS
ASEF Young Minds is a series of popular science lectures by young people, which encourages young people to present their research work and experience gained within the ASEF Junior Fellowship in a way that is accessible and understandable to the general public. In the project, ASEF connects with local organizations operating in the places where the lecturers come from. Through cooperation, the aim is to connect and integrate young intellectuals into the local Slovenian environment.
ASEF connects and unites Slovenian scientists and academics around the world.
LokalPatriot is the central youth and independent cultural producer in Dolenjska.
