About the Lecture: Big Data and the Future of Oncology

In modern medicine, the line between the laboratory and the patient’s bedside is blurring. Dr. Richard Aplenc will present how Big Data, translational research, and innovative immunotherapies are creating a future where cancer treatment for children is more effective and less invasive.

His work focuses on:

  • Precision Medicine: Developing personalized strategies to reduce treatment toxicity (e.g., cardiotoxicity).
  • Digital Medicine: Utilizing the ExtractEHR software to analyze vast amounts of data from electronic health records.
  • Advanced Therapies: Using genetically modified cells (CAR-T) to fight acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Who is Dr. Richard Aplenc?

Dr. Richard Aplenc is an ASEF mentor and a Professor of Pediatrics and a Professor of Biostatistics, Informatics, and Epidemiology at the prestigious Perelman School of Medicine (University of Pennsylvania). As the holder of the Mai and Harry West Endowed Chair in Pediatric Research, he is considered one of the leading experts pushing the boundaries in the treatment of childhood leukemia.

Key Achievements:

  • Led the largest Phase III clinical trial for pediatric AML in the world to date.
  • Co-inventor and lead for clinical trials of revolutionary immunotherapies (anti-CD123 and anti-CD38 CAR).
  • His work directly impacts oncological care in numerous centers across the U.S. and worldwide.
