ASEF Junior Fellow Matej Igličar Successfully Completes Luxembourg Research Visit!

July 23, 2024

In July 2024, Matej Igličar, ASEF Junior Fellow generation 2024, completed his research visit at the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL)!

Matej Igličar is an alumnus of the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, a former tutor of Roman and criminal procedural law and the winner of the Best Oralist award at the University of Antwerp’s 2023 PAX Moot Court.

During his research visit, Matej was mentored by Prof Dr Verica Trstenjak, a renowned professor of EU law and former Advocate General at the European Court of Justice. He received additional guidance from the acting director of the LCEL, Prof Pierre-Henri Conac, and has expressed significant gratitude towards both professors for making his visit “all he could have wished for”.

During his time at the LCEL, Matej explored the history and evolution of judicial cooperation among EU member states, comparing the evolutions of cooperation in civil and criminal matters. In focusing on the international private law of the European Union, our Junior Fellow primarily consulted older legal texts, in order to gain an insight into the genesis of a judiciary system which he sees as one of “continuous relevance and legal vibrance”. In outlining the history of the European Union’s private international law, Matej was able to not only better understand a complex and refined judicial system, but to unravel its potential sights of improvement and further development.

Beyond his academic work, Igličar expressed that the research visit provided him with many opportunities to meet experienced researchers in his field and forge meaningful connections. The proximity of the European Court of Justice also allowed him to connect with Slovenian legal experts working within the institution, an experience which he marked as “extraordinary”.

Matej also commented on the many advantages which the city of Luxembourg offers youth:

“There is a myriad of young people from all over the world, since the city offers good employment opportunities. This contributes to the colorful atmosphere and offers any newcomer many possibilities to get to know and connect with new people.”

We are extremely happy for Matej’s positive experience and sincerely congratulate him on successfully completing his research visit. We thank his mentor Dr Prof Verica Trstenjak and the director of the Luxembourg Centre for European Law, Dr Pierre-Henri Conac, for contributing towards Matej’s enriching research visit.

We also thank the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad, the Office for Youth and all ASEF donors for supporting the work of ASEF and our Junior Fellows.
