ASEF Junior Fellow Lena Kogoj’s Inspiring Journey at UC Riverside
Lena Kogoj, a Biochemistry student at the University of Ljubljana, recently completed a 10-week research visit at the University of California, Riverside. Her research was conducted under the mentorship of ASEF Mentor and Associate Professor Dr. Jernej Murn.
As part of Dr. Murn’s RNA biology lab, Lena focused on investigating the mechanisms of pseudouridylation mediated by the PUS7 enzyme. This cutting-edge research deepened her understanding of biochemistry and molecular biology while equipping her with essential skills such as experimental design, result analysis, and troubleshooting. These skills will undoubtedly contribute to her future academic and professional pursuits.
In addition to her research, Lena played an active role in organizing the ASEF Gala, held in San Francisco in November. This event brought together Slovenes living in the U.S. to celebrate their heritage with Slovene food and music. Lena found it undeniably meaningful to connect with the Slovenian community abroad.
Beyond the lab and her professional commitments, Lena embraced the opportunity to immerse herself in new cultures and explore the beauty of California and the United States. With new friends she met along the way, Lena discovered iconic destinations such as Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Her travels also extended to other states, where she marveled at the dazzling lights of Las Vegas, Nevada, and the awe-inspiring vastness of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Reflecting on the experience, Lena expressed her gratitude:
“Conducting research in an international environment has motivated me even further to pursue a career in science, while living on a new continent broadened my horizons. I am deeply thankful to my mentor, Dr. Jernej Murn, and ASEF for making this incredible opportunity possible.”
