ASEF Junior Fellow Jernej Birk’s Transformative Research Journey at Rice University

January 03, 2025

Jernej Birk, a third-year chemistry student at the University of Ljubljana and an ASEF Junior Fellow, recently completed a five-month research visit at Rice University in the esteemed Sarlah Group, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. David Sarlah.

During his time with the group, Jernej worked on pioneering research in organic chemistry, focusing on the development of synthetic pathways and contributing to high-level total synthesis projects. His efforts included the total synthesis of the natural product nimbolide, studies on compounds with a trans-decalin system, and designing novel synthetic routes for complex bicyclic organic molecules. He also participated in group meetings where he analyzed scientific papers, addressed challenges in synthesis design, and monitored the progress of PhD students’ research.

At the beginning of his stay, Jernej helped with the relocation of the Sarlah Group’s laboratory at Rice University. With the support of a dedicated mentor, he quickly mastered proper and safe experimental techniques, allowing him to integrate seamlessly into the team.

Outside the lab, Jernej fully immersed himself in Houston’s vibrant culture. He attended sporting events, theater performances, operas, and museums while exploring the city’s diverse culinary scene. A passionate cook, Jernej also enjoyed discovering new recipes and experimenting in the kitchen.

Reflecting on his experience, Jernej highlighted the significant impact of his research stay on his academic and professional growth.

“My time at Rice University greatly improved my understanding and skills in organic chemistry, preparing me for future challenges in my studies and career,” he shared.

Jernej expressed deep gratitude to ASEF for making this opportunity possible and to Dr. Sarlah for welcoming him into his group and guiding him through various research challenges. He also extended heartfelt thanks to his family for their support and encouragement throughout this journey.

With these invaluable experiences, Jernej is ready to take on the next steps in his journey as a chemist, equipped with enhanced expertise and a broadened global perspective on research.
