ASEF Junior Fellow Črt Rozman Completes Research Visit at University of Wisconsin-Madison

November 20, 2024

Črt Rozman, a 2024 ASEF Junior Fellow, recently completed his research visit at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, at the Wisconsin Institute for Medical Research in the U.S. He conducted his work under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Jeraj, a professor specializing in medical physics, radiology, human oncology, and biomedical engineering.

The primary goal of his research project was to investigate asymmetries in Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease, an incurable neurodegenerative disorder, is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly. Although asymmetries are present in the brains of healthy individuals, little is known about how these change as Alzheimer’s progresses. Črt explored how to quantify asymmetry, the differences in asymmetry observed among healthy individuals, those with mild cognitive impairment, and those with dementia, and how asymmetry changes with declining cognitive abilities. In the last week of his visit, Črt presented his findings and workflow to colleagues at a joint meeting of the American and Slovenian research groups. He has also paved the way for at least some of his findings to be included in a publication.

In the U.S., Črt formed many new friendships with people from around the world and experienced countless unforgettable moments. He found most companionship through playing basketball at outdoor courts and training with a professional volleyball club, with whom he traveled to Milwaukee for a match and won a tournament in LaCrosse. He also attended two NBA games in nearby Milwaukee and spent the end of his research visit in Chicago with a Slovenian friend. When not engaged in sports or work, he enjoyed leisure activities, attending block parties, exploring Madison’s nightlife, going to concerts, and participating in social evenings. He was fortunate enough to celebrate Halloween during his visit, dressing up in a costume for the first time since childhood. Additionally, he explored the beautiful nature around the lakes, visited botanical gardens, toured the Madison Capitol, and tasted local food at the famous Farmer’s Market.

The ASEF research visit was an invaluable experience for Črt. Beyond the knowledge he gained from working with leading researchers in the field of medical physics, Črt learned independence, responsibility, and discovered his ambitions for future academic and personal pursuits. This genuine American experience further deepened Črt’s love and respect for his homeland. Words can barely express how grateful he is to ASEF and his mentor Robert for their guidance, advice, and the opportunity. Special thanks go to Ali, the supervisor of his research work.
