ASEF Fellow Martin Jazbec on a Research Visit to Deakin University, Australia

Martin Jazbec is completing his Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (UL FKKT). His ASEF research visit with Dr. Kaja Antlej at Deakin University in Australia provided him with incredible personal and professional growth in the field of space sciences, along with in-depth knowledge of current trends and key directions in the space industry. Martin describes the ASEF fellowship as a catalyst for synthesizing top-tier engineering expertise, interdisciplinarity, and a lifelong passion for aviation and space.

He kicked off his visit by attending the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney, widely regarded as the world’s largest and most prestigious event in space science. During the congress, Martin attended numerous lectures and panels featuring the visionaries shaping the future of space exploration. By engaging with representatives from leading space companies, national space agencies, researchers, and astronauts, he had the opportunity to actively integrate into both the Australian and global space ecosystems

During his stay, Martin served as a guest lecturer and evaluator for the Engineering Design course at Deakin University. He also contributed to the 24th Australian Space Research Conference and attended several other high-profile events and conferences organized by Melbourne’s prestigious universities and institutions.

While living in Melbourne, Martin connected with the local Slovenian community through the Slovenian Australian Academic Association (SAAA). A highlight of his visit to the Slovenian Association Melbourne was seeing a piece of Mount Triglav rock displayed in a showcase. In his free time, Martin explored the world’s southernmost five-million-strong city in his running shoes, enjoying views of the “city” skyline. On weekends, the ASEF team ventured into the wilderness, occasionally enjoying local delicacies for a well-deserved lunch – including kangaroo goulash.

Following the conclusion of his research visit, Martin embarked on a multi-week adventure through New Zealand and Southeastern Australia, soaking in the wild nature, breathtaking landscapes, and encounters with authentic Australian wildlife.

Martin would like to thank ASEF for this incredible, life-changing opportunity for young people. Special thanks go to his mentor, Dr. Kaja Antlej, for her extraordinary support, career advice, and – as she herself emphasizes – “mentorship for life,” which goes far beyond the mere transfer of technical knowledge.
