ASEF Fellow Jaka Godejša Completes Research Visit at Deakin University

October 09, 2024

ASEF Fellow Jaka Godejša, a master’s student at the University of Primorska, Faculty of Tourism Studies – Turistica, recently concluded a 10-week research visit at Deakin University, Australia. Under the mentorship of Dr. Kaja Antlej at the School of Engineering’s VR Lab and HuTech – Human-Centric Technologies Research Group, Jaka’s research explored virtual cycling as a tool to promote tourism destinations. His study measured participants’ emotional responses using physiological signals and surveys during a virtual cycling experience through the Slovenian-Italian Karst.

Over 33 participants collectively cycled for 10 hours, helping Jaka gather crucial data for his master’s thesis. Beyond research, Jaka embraced the Australian experience, traveling over 5,000 km to iconic landmarks such as Uluru and Coober Pedy. His adventures also included hiking King’s Canyon and sleeping underground in an opal mining town.

Jaka actively participated in local activities, joining a student running club, completing a 10 km race in Melbourne, and exploring scenic areas by bike. He also attended various academic and industry events, including the 3-Minute Thesis competition at Deakin University and a Travel Massive Meetup, where he made valuable connections in Australia’s tourism industry.

The visit also featured a collaborative presentation with his Slovenian mentor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dejan Križaj, showcasing Slovenian tourism and research at a HuTech doctoral seminar. Jaka expressed deep gratitude to ASEF for this enriching experience, which greatly contributed to his academic and personal growth.

This exchange exemplifies ASEF’s commitment to fostering international research collaboration and providing students with life-changing opportunities. We thank the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad, the Office for Youth and all ASEF donors for supporting the work of ASEF and our Junior Fellows.
