Young Minds: From Research in Australia to a Strategic Partnership with Novartis
On Tuesday, April 7, the Ljubljana Technology Park hosted the latest event in our Young Minds (Mladi umi) series. This gathering was particularly special, as it featured both a high-level scientific presentation and the official signing of a strategic partnership between the ASEF Institute and Novartis in Slovenia.

How Does the Immune System Know When Enough is Enough?
The highlight of the event was a presentation by 2025 Fellowship recipients Teja Pelko and Maša Karčovnik. As part of the ASEF Research Abroad program, they spent the past year at the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences at the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia).
Under the mentorship of the world-renowned expert Dr. Boštjan Kobe, they explored the intricate processes of innate immunity. Their lecture addressed a fundamental question: how does the body regulate its defense mechanisms to ensure they don’t become harmful to its own cells? They specifically highlighted:
- The role of TLR 10 receptors and the BCAP protein in inhibiting excessive immune responses.
- How these mechanisms impact the body’s defense against pathogens.
- The significance of their findings for the future development of cancer treatments.
Their experience from the other side of the world reaffirms ASEF’s mission – connecting Slovenian talent with top-tier global laboratories and bringing that invaluable knowledge back to Slovenia.
A New Chapter: Strategic Partnership with Novartis
The event also marked a significant milestone for the future of our foundation. With the official signing of a sponsorship agreement, we have confirmed a strategic partnership with Novartis.
“At the ASEF Institute, we believe our Fellows are the heart of the organization. For their ideas to truly bear fruit, they need reliable support and an environment that encourages networking and collaboration,” emphasized Dr. Rok Sekirnik, Director of the ASEF Institute, in his opening remarks.

Support for young talent was also echoed by Dr. Špela Jalen, Head of Biologics Development Mengeš at Novartis, who stressed the value of innovation and strategic investment in the future of scientists at the start of their careers. The collaboration between ASEF and Novartis is set to enable many more success stories and international breakthroughs in the future.
“Slovenia possesses exceptional scientific and innovative potential. At Novartis, we believe that great scientific stories begin where knowledge is shared and young people are encouraged toward courage and excellence. We see this partnership with ASEF as a sincere investment in young scientists and in a connected, open, and innovative future for Slovenian science – both at home and globally.” – Dr. Špela Jalen

Networking and the Exchange of Ideas
The formal program was followed by a pleasant gathering over refreshments, where guests exchanged views on the research presented and the opportunities brought by the new partnership in an informal setting.
We extend our gratitude to all participants, to Novartis for their trust, and to Teja and Maša for their inspiring presentation. Together, we are building a space where Slovenian knowledge knows no borders!
