ASEF Speaker Series: Prof. Dr. Maja Čemažar on the Future of Oncology and the Power of Electroporation

As part of our regular ASEF Speaker Series, we cordially invite you to an extraordinary lecture by Prof. Dr. Maja Čemažar on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 6:00 PM. The event will take place in Lecture Hall 2 (Predavalnica 2) at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (FKKT UL), where we will explore the frontiers of modern oncology.

The Use of Electroporation: From Bench to Bedside

The lecture, titled “The Use of Electroporation in Oncology,” promises a deep dive into one of the most advanced approaches in cancer treatment. Prof. Dr. Maja Čemažar, a leading expert in experimental oncology, will present how gene electrotransfer and electrochemotherapy are used for precise, targeted tumor treatment.

Her research focus includes:

• Gene therapy designed to stimulate the body’s immune response to cancer.
• Inhibition of tumor angiogenesis (preventing the growth of blood vessels in tumors).
• Clinical translation, ensuring that basic scientific discoveries are directly transformed into life-saving clinical practices.

About the Speaker: A Pillar of Slovenian and European Oncology

Prof. Dr. Maja Čemažar began her academic journey at the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana and furthered her expertise at prestigious institutions in the UK (Gray Cancer Institute) and France (IPBS). Today, she holds key positions at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, where she heads the Department of Research and Education as well as the Department of Experimental Oncology.

Her influence extends far beyond Slovenia. As an elected member of the Executive Boards of OECI (Organisation of European Cancer Institutes) and ECo (European Cancer Organisation), she helps shape European cancer policy. She also leads the significant EU project Horizon CCI4EU. For her outstanding achievements, she has received numerous awards, including the Miroslav Zei Award (2023) and the Frank Reidy Award (2018).

In addition to her groundbreaking research, Prof. Čemažar is a dedicated mentor who has guided nearly 100 students through their academic journeys. This event is a unique opportunity for students and young researchers to learn how to bridge the gap between basic science and high-impact clinical results.
