60 Years of the Fulbright Program in Slovenia
Ljubljana, January 29, 2026 – We have marked 60 years of the Fulbright Program’s operation on our soil. A ceremonial symposium, co-organized by ASEF in cooperation with ZRC SAZU and the U.S. Embassy in Slovenia, highlighted the exceptional achievements of scholars and reaffirmed the commitment to ongoing academic cooperation.
The Fulbright Program represents the gold standard of international student and research exchange. From its beginnings during the era of the former Yugoslavia, when the first 200 scholars visited the U.S., to today, with over 300 participants in independent Slovenia, the program remains a key pillar of Slovenian-American cooperation.
“Many Fulbright scholars from Slovenia have contributed significantly to the development of our country; among them, we find distinguished lawyers, doctors, rectors, writers, philosophers, and artists,” said the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Dr. Igor Papič, at the ceremony honoring the 60th anniversary.
It is important to note that this is not just about scholarships for Slovenians going to the U.S., but also for Americans coming to Slovenia, and that the program is funded by both sides. This reciprocity is a beautiful example of the good relations between our countries. During these visits, not only professional but also friendly ties are forged, bringing our nations even closer together. – dr. Igor Papič
Slovenia is also one of the few countries to have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Fulbright Program for an indefinite period, proving its deep commitment to the initiative.
A Glimpse into History and Diverse Fields of Study
The symposium offered a rich program beginning with a historical overview. Prof. Dr. Neli Ajlec (University of Ljubljana) and Prof. Dr. Radina Vučetić (University of Belgrade) shed light on the evolution of the Fulbright Program in the region and its impact on transatlantic knowledge exchange over the decades.
The central part of the event featured an alumni panel discussion, where experts from various fields shared their experiences:
- Medicine and STEM: Innovations that change the world.
- Law and Social Sciences: Shaping a more just society.
- Humanities, Architecture, and the Arts: Cultural bridges that enrich both nations.
ASEF and Fulbright: United for Slovenian Knowledge
As a partner of the event, ASEF proudly supports the values embodied by the Fulbright Program. Connecting Slovenian students with American institutions and vice versa is at the heart of our mission. We believe that these experiences open horizons for young talents, enabling them to bring their expertise back to their homeland.
On the 60th anniversary of Fulbright in Slovenia, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all alumni and wish future generations an inspiring Fulbright journey!
