ASEF Young Minds: Popular Science Talk by Jernej Birk – From Organic Chemistry to Cowboys: ASEF Research Visit in Houston
On Thursday, November 20, 2025, the Gymnasium Novo mesto hosted a popular science lecture as part of the ASEF Young Minds series, organized by the American Slovenian Education Foundation (ASEF) in cooperation with local institutions. This time, students were inspired by Jernej Birk, a master’s student of chemistry at the University of Ljubljana and ASEF Fellow Generation 2024, who delivered the lecture “From Organic Chemistry to Cowboys: ASEF Research Visit in Houston.”
The event held special significance for the school, as Jernej—once a student sitting in the very same classrooms—returned as a young researcher shaping an international career. Before the lecture, chemistry teacher Branka Klemenčič introduced him with visible pride, highlighting the many awards and achievements Jernej earned during his high-school years. Students were thus able to meet someone who once walked the same halls and is now advancing in the world of scientific research.

At the beginning of the lecture, Jernej shared the story of world-renowned organic chemist K. C. Nicolaou, born in Cyprus, who began his scientific journey in an environment without proper laboratories or equipment. Despite the odds, Nicolaou persisted, self-studied, and gradually became one of the most influential figures in modern organic chemistry. Jernej highlighted this story as a reminder that a scientific career does not depend on perfect conditions, but on curiosity, courage, and perseverance. He encouraged students not to fear challenges but to follow their interests and seize opportunities to engage in research—whether in Slovenia or abroad:
I hope today’s presentation encourages you to take that step forward. When you truly want something, make the effort—send that message, try something you think you’re not good enough for. It is often these brave steps that open up your future.
Jernej then guided them through his five-month ASEF research visit at Rice University in Houston, where he worked under the mentorship of Prof. David Šarlah, focusing on the total synthesis of natural products, the development of new synthetic methods, and molecules relevant to chemical biology and medicine. Beyond the scientific aspects, he spoke about student life in the United States, Houston’s cultural diversity, and the unique Texan spirit expressed through art, cuisine, and sports.
After the lecture, students stayed for refreshments and an informal conversation with Jernej, showing great interest in the ASEF Research Abroad Fellowship and research opportunities. The event became a valuable moment of inspiration, motivation, and personal connection with a young researcher whose path began at their own school.
ASEF extends sincere thanks to Branka Klemenčič and the entire Gymnasium Novo mesto for their hospitality and support. We believe Jernej’s visit sparked curiosity and confidence in many students, encouraging them to pursue science, research, and bold career paths.
