ASEF Research Abroad Fellowship: Jerneja Koren Enhanced Her Knowledge at Texas Tech University

December 05, 2024

Jerneja Koren, an MSci student of Immunology and Pharmacology at the University of Aberdeen, spent 10 weeks on a research visit under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Klementina Fon Tacer at Texas Tech University in Amarillo. This visit, organized as part of the ASEF Research Abroad Fellowship program, allowed her to deepen her expertise and gain practical experience in molecular biology.

After completing the initial administrative preparations, Jerneja embarked on research projects focused on techniques such as immunofluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, and RNA sequencing analysis. Together with a PhD student, she developed protocols for the fluorescent dyes MitoTracker and LipidTOX, which were utilized in both flow cytometry and microscopy. During this time, she worked with a confocal microscope for the first time, gaining valuable hands-on experience with advanced technology.

The research visit also involved work with various cell lines and primary cells isolated from laboratory animals, further broadening her laboratory skills. Jerneja emphasized, “As this is a crucial technique in experimental medical science, the experience I gained in this field is highly beneficial for my career.”

Jernejan actively participated in lab group meetings, presenting her work twice and receiving valuable feedback. Additionally, she attended lectures on research methodologies delivered by Prof. Dr. Fon Tacer. Upon returning to Slovenia, Jerneja showcased her achievements at the SMUL conference, where she prepared a professional poster.

Exploring Culture and Making Connections

Beyond her research, Jerneja immersed herself in the cultural diversity of the United States. Alongside other students, including ASEF Fellow Vesna Jurjevič, she participated in a volleyball tournament, a trip to Colorado, and celebrations of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. These activities enriched her experience by allowing her to explore new cultures and forge meaningful friendships.

Professional and Personal Growth

The ASEF Research Abroad Fellowship offered Jerneja an invaluable opportunity for both professional and personal development. She gained new skills in flow cytometry, microscopy, and bioinformatics, while honing her critical thinking and presentation abilities. Furthermore, the visit enhanced her understanding of international research environments and inspired her to pursue further scientific exploration.

Jernejan’s time at Texas Tech University exemplifies how ASEF programs empower young researchers to unlock their potential and build lasting connections within the global scientific community.
