Juš Žavbi Successfully Completes His Research Visit at the University of Utah

September 17, 2024

Juš Žavbi, another one of our ASEF Junior Fellows generation 2024, has recently completed his research visit! Juš attended the laboratory of Dr David Križaj at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. He conducted research in cell and animal models to find a connection between mechanical stress and mitochondrial changes in the eye.

By simulating increased intraocular pressure or by direct activation of mechanical channels in trabecular meshwork cells, Juš analyzed the response and functional changes in mitochondria. But the experiments were not only conducted on cells, Juš was working on animal models of air blast eye damage as well. If the administration of the tested drug shows improvement in recovery and eyesight of the animal model, this will signifiy a completely novel approach to treating pressure related eye damage.

Besides working in the lab, Juš enjoyed the beautiful nature of Utah, which has the most national parks of any state in the USA. Mountaineering was a much needed relief from the endless urban sprawl of the Salt Lake Valley. When not in nature, Juš spent his free time at various clubs around campus, such as the writing club, board game club and the 3D printing club. That way he met plenty of Americans as well as other foreign students – some even familiar with Slovenia, despite the fact they often couldn’t differentiate it from Slovakia.

Juš reports that overall, the experience in Utah was a very positive one – and still is, as Juš has extended his visit. A new research environment brought him many new skills and maybe even a paper or two, all of which will serve him greatly in his future academic career.

Juš is incredibly thankful to Dr David Križaj and everyone at the laboratory for this wonderful experience. We’re delighted to hear of Juš’s productive time at the University of Utah. We sincerely congratulate him on the successful completion of his research visit and wish him all the best in his future academic work!

We also thank the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad, the Office for Youth and all ASEF donors for supporting the work of ASEF and our Junior Fellows.
