Caroline Morton Completes Her Research Visit With The ASEF Institute

September 06, 2024

We are thrilled to announce the conclusion of another research visit! Caroline Morton has  successfully completed her Junior Fellowship in Slovenia, where she worked for the ASEF Institute under the mentorship of Dr Marinka Žitnik.

Caroline is currently pursuing an integrated master’s degree in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bath. She aspires to work at the frontiers of AI and spent her time in Slovenia working on a project focused on using Machine Learning (AI) to analyze data collected by ASEF on the migration patterns of educated individuals. The project aimed to address why individuals choose to return to or leave Slovenia.

Data show that there is a significant disparity between citizens who emigrate from or immigrate to Slovenia yearly, with more people leaving. While the factors which influence migration are diverse and interrelated, some outcomes are undeniable – namely the demographic loss and a shortage of trained and qualified people to drive various activities and innovation. Our Junior Fellow’s data analysis aimed to explain and illustrate the interrelationship between these diverse factors.

Caroline’s findings will be an integral part of this project and we look forward to her detailed report. Besides her research and analytical work, Caroline also sought to reconnect with her Slovenian heritage.

Back home, she is a member of the British Slovene Society, which connects the Slovenian community in the UK with cultural and social events. Caroline enrolled in a Slovenian language course and took the time to explore the beautiful nature, immerse herself in the local culture and taste true Slovenian cuisine. In her own words:

“I had a fantastic time exploring Slovenia and immersing myself in the local culture. I enjoyed trips with other fellows to Piran and Velika Planina, which were great opportunities to bond and see the beautiful landscapes of Slovenia. Some of my personal highlights include visiting Lake Bled – especially enjoying the famous Bled cream cake! – exploring the Postojna Caves, and walking around the charming streets of Ljubljana. […] Additionally, I explored local Slovenian cuisine, and the “Open Kitchen” event in Ljubljana was a particular highlight. I must admit, the Slovenian mashed potatoes were my absolute favourite!”

We’re extremely happy that Caroline’s Fellowship experience was academically engaging as well as culturally enriching. We look forward to reading the results of her work and we thank her mentor Dr Marinka Žitnik for her guidance and expertise.

To conclude in Caroline’s own words:

“My research visit to the ASEF office was a brilliant experience. I gained invaluable insights into my field, met inspiring people, and fell in love with Slovenia. This experience has greatly enriched both my academic and personal life.”

Congratulations, Caroline, and best of luck in all your future endeavors!

We also thank the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad and all ASEF donors for supporting the work of ASEF and our Junior Fellows.
