Tijan Prijon: Using Machine Learning in Cosmology

May 24, 2023 | 7:00 pm | Fakulteta za matematiko in fiziko Univerze v Ljubljani (Jadranska ulica 19, 1000 Ljubljana)

The American Slovenian Educational Foundation is organizing a popular science lecture on Wednesday, May 24, at 7 p.m. in collaboration with the FMF Student Organization. The lecture will be held by Tijan Prijon, ASEF Junior Fellow 2021, a physics student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Ljubljana. The lecture is entitled “The Use of Machine Learning in Cosmology” and will be held at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in Ljubljana (the number of the lecture hall will be announced later).

REGISTRATION

To attend the lecture, you must register by May 24, no later than 6 p.m.

ABOUT THE LECTURE

In cosmology, we can use simulations to model the formation and evolution of galaxies. Machine learning methods are extremely suitable for determining and interpreting all the results that follow from such simulations. In the lecture, the lecturer will present the basics of machine learning, which are used to predict the concentration of halo dark matter, and present his experience of dealing with the problem.

ABOUT THE LECTURER

Tijan Prijon is a physics student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, where he will graduate this year, and next year he will continue his studies at ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. During his Research Visit with ASEF he visited prof. dr. Uroš Seljak at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked on the prediction of cosmological parameters from simulations.

ASEF YOUNG MINDS

ASEF Young Minds is a series of popular science lectures, which encourages young people to present their research work and experience gained within the framework of the ASEF fellowship program in a way that is accessible and understandable to the general public. In the project, ASEF connects with local organizations that operate in the places where the lecturers come from. The aim of cooperation is to connect and integrate young learners into the local Slovenian environment.

ASEF connects and unites Slovenian scientists and academics all over the world.

The FMF Student Organization is a student organization of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana, which takes care of the extracurricular activities of FMF students. They are responsible for the biggest events at the faculty, for example, in the past academic year, they organized the traditional Mafia picnic with more than 700 participants, a charity stand-up with Tin Vodopivec and many other events that brightened the students’ everyday study life.

The project is supported by the Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Youth and the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad.
