ASEF mentor 2027. Application for Research Abroad is availabe here.
Urban Senica is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University (USA), where he conducts research on integrated photonics in the Laboratory for Nanoscale Optics, led by Prof. Marko Lončar. In 2023, he completed his PhD in physics in the group of Prof. Jérôme Faist and Prof. Giacomo Scalari at ETH Zurich (Switzerland), where he developed an integrated photonics platform based on planarized terahertz quantum cascade lasers and frequency combs, for which he was awarded the ETH Medal and the European Physical Society QEOD Thesis Prize. He completed his BSc and MSc in Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) in 2015 and 2017, respectively, including a period at TU Munich (Germany). His previous research experience includes working on nanowire lasers at TU Munich (Germany), radiation-hard semiconductor particle detectors at CERN (Switzerland), and silicon solar cells at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). He is a Member of IEEE, Optica, and SPIE.

Research projects:
Dr. Senica’s research interests cover a broad area of optics and photonics, including semiconductor lasers, frequency combs, integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, microwave and terahertz photonics, modeling and simulation with advanced optimization, and nanofabrication. At Harvard, he is focusing on the design and simulation, cleanroom fabrication, and characterization of innovative integrated photonic devices based on thin-film lithium niobate and III-V semiconductors, including single-mode and mode-locked lasers, frequency combs, and high-speed modulators. These could potentially be used in fundamental science as well as in practical applications, such as high-speed communications, ranging, spectroscopy, and sensing.
