Miloš Žefran
Bio:
Miloš Žefran is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, where he has also received a M.S. in Electrical Engineering. He has received an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a National Science Foundation (NSF) Postdoctoral Scholar at the California Institute of Technology. Before joining UIC, he was on the faculty at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also held a visiting position at the University of Pisa, Italy. Dr. Žefran has received a NSF Career Award and has been continuously supported by the NSF.
Research projects:
Dr. Žefran’s research is on robot autonomy. Specific areas include robotic surgery, physical human-robot interaction, assistive robots for the elderly, and automotive cyber-physical systems. His most recent work focuses on training foundation models for surgery and on how they generalize across different surgical modalities. As a part of this work, his group has curated several datasets. His other projects study how wearable sensors can be used in the neuropsychological assessment of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, how to interpret deep-learned error-correcting codes, and how to effectively control large groups of microrobots moving in a global field.
