Martin Trapecar

Bio:

Dr. Martin Trapecar received his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Maribor in 2014. He subsequently completed postdoctoral training at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is now an assistant professor of medicine and biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he leads the Laboratory of Human Biomimetics . His research integrates human experimental biology, immunology, bioengineering, and computational modeling to understand how interactions among tissues shape health and disease.

Research projects:

The Laboratory of Human Biomimetics develops human tissue-based experimental systems that reconstruct key aspects of physiology outside the body. We connect organoids, primary human tissues, immune cells, and engineered tissue compartments through controlled circulation to study how signals exchanged between organs generate system-level responses. By combining these microphysiological systems with longitudinal molecular profiling, perturbation experiments, and computational modeling, we aim to understand causal mechanisms of disease, predict patient-specific responses, and create more human-relevant platforms for testing drugs, vaccines, and other therapeutic interventions.
