Ivan Bratko

Bio:

Ivan Bratko is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Ljubljana. He was a pioneer of AI research in Slovenia. His most notable contributions are in machine learning, (inductive) logic programming, and qualitative model learning, with applications in medicine, ecology, and robotics.

Research projects:

Recently, his research interests have focused on interpretable learning, planning from small data, and the estimation of problem difficulty for humans. His publications include the books Prolog Programming for AI (4th edition, Pearson Education) and KARDIO: A Study in Deep and Qualitative Knowledge for Expert Systems (with Mozetič and Lavrač, MIT Press). He has worked as a visiting professor or researcher in various institutions worldwide, including the Jožef Stefan Institute (Ljubljana), the University of Edinburgh, the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow), the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales (Sydney), the Technical University of Madrid, Alpen-Adria-Universität (Klagenfurt, Austria), Universidad Nacional del Sur (Bahía Blanca, Argentina), Delft University of Technology, and Boğaziçi University (Istanbul). He is a recipient of the Zois Award for outstanding scientific achievements and is a full member of SASA (Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts) and the EAS (Engineering Academy of Slovenia), as well as a Fellow of EurAI and Academia Europaea.
