Gregor Verbič
Bio:
Gregor Verbič is Professor of Electrical Engineering in the School of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at the University of Sydney. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in
electrical engineering from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 1995, 2000, and 2003,
respectively. In 2005, he was a NATO–NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of
Waterloo, Canada. He joined the University of Sydney in 2010.
Research projects:
Professor Verbič’s expertise spans power-system operation, stability and control, and
electricity markets. His current research focuses on the grid and market integration of
distributed energy resources located at consumer premises—such as rooftop solar, battery
storage, and electric vehicles—as well as large-scale wind and solar generation. In
particular, he develops methods and algorithms for aggregating and coordinating large
numbers of self-interested agents and stochastic energy resources connected through
power-electronic converters. Motivated by the challenges facing the electricity industry, his
research aims to facilitate the transition from a legacy fossil-fuel-based power system to one
supplied predominantly by renewable energy. He received the IEEE Power & Energy Society
Prize Paper Award in 2006.
