Dr. Gregor Gorjanc is a Professor of Selective Breeding at The Roslin Institute (University of Edinburgh). He is also affiliated with the Global Academy for Agriculture and Food Security (University of Edinburgh), the Centre for Statistics (University of Edinburgh) and the Biotechnical Faculty (University of Ljubljana). He studied Animal Science (engineer) and Genetics (PhD) at the Biotechnical Faculty (University of Ljubljana) in Slovenia. He is thrilled by whole-system (population) approaches and likes to combine data science, genetics, and breeding methods to research management and improvement of populations. His speciality is the ability to work across a range of species, including animals, plants, and insects.

Prof. Gorjanc leads the HighlanderLab (edin.ac/highlander-lab) that  focuses on populations used for food, feed, and fibre production with some spillover into other populations. His team is particularly interested in: (i) quantitative methods for genetics and breeding, (ii) design and optimisation of breeding programmes, and (iii) analysis of data to unravel biology and to find new ways of improving populations. He is also part of the Quantitative Biology division at The Roslin Institute (edin.ac/qb-division).
