Zara Bunc
Bio:
Zara Bunc is a biochemistry student at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana. Her research interests lie primarily in molecular biology, genetics and bioinformatics. She gained practical experience at the Institute of Pathophysiology and the National Institute of Chemistry, where she trained in electrophysiological measurements, molecular cloning and optophysiological analyses. In her undergraduate thesis, under the mentorship of Academician Prof. Dr. Robert Zorec, she investigated the role of amisyn in astrocyte exocytosis, thereby contributing to a better understanding of fusion pore mechanisms in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.
Projects:
As part of the ASEF Junior Fellows programme, she will conduct research at King’s College London under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jernej Ule. She is particularly drawn to his work on RNA regulation, alternative splicing and the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. A deeper understanding of RNA processing and its role in central nervous system disorders represents a crucial step towards the development of novel therapeutic approaches. Her background in cellular mechanisms, glial cell biology and molecular signalling will enable her to make a valuable contribution to the research group while continuing to develop professionally.
She is also actively involved in research and science associations, including event organisation. As Head of Corporate Relations and Finance, she contributed to BioFair, the largest career fair for natural science students in Slovenia. She also founded and led BEST Science Days, a three-day interdisciplinary educational event designed to connect students across scientific disciplines. In her free time, she enjoys tennis, skiing, travelling and meeting new people.
