Nikolas Gestrich

Bio:

Nikolas is a junior physics undergraduate student with a focus on computational methods at the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering. He is interested in applying physics to solve real-world problems and is particularly drawn to quantum computing, sustainable energy solutions, and the social applications of mathematics and data science.

He is connected to Slovenian culture through his family, especially his grandparents, Ivan and Barbara. Growing up, he was part of the Slovenian communities in Chicago and Cleveland, Ohio, where he frequently visited relatives and friends. His most memorable Slovenian experience was working as a counselor at the Pristava camp, where he led activities and taught young people about Slovenian culture.

Aspirations & Interests:

Nikolas has visited Slovenia several times to see his extended family, but he is especially excited to live there this summer, fully immersing himself in the culture and language. He expects this experience to deepen his connection to his heritage while offering opportunities for academic and professional growth. He is looking forward to conducting physics research under the guidance of ASEF mentors.

In his free time, he loves spending time outdoors—whether hiking, cycling, or swimming—and also enjoys listening to music and watching movies. This summer, alongside his research, he hopes to explore the country, connect with other ASEF fellows, visit his relatives, and enjoy the natural beauty of Slovenia.
